Skinhead Keston

Baby K underwent the shaver yesterday and is now a very cool skinhead. Ok, scrap that, actually he looks really funny. But being kiasu parents, we went ahead and made the decision for him to shave it all for his full month. It's supposed to signify 圆满. We even chose to do IT on the 24th day to signify 二十四孝. I know, I know, so superstitious...but what the heck. You get just one try to make things right.

K was considerably 乖 when having his hair cut. He only got fussy when the hunger pangs hit. So the haircut became a 3-man job. HW having to carry him, me having to feed him and the hairdresser trying to shave him. It was quite a comical sight.

On Monday, we went to the polyclinic to get K's jaundice level checked out. Thankfully his jaundice level has gone down and the doc thinks it should be ok. Update on his stats at 3 weeks:
Weight = 3.865kg (+285grams since the previous week)
Length = 54cm (+4cm since birth)
Head Circumference = 35.3cm (+0.3cm since birth)

And just for the sake of remembrance, here are some photos of Keston when he still had hair:

Developments

At 2 weeks old, Li'l K has learnt to keep his eyes open and gaze around. He has also learnt to stick his tongue out when he doesn't want the bottle. Previously he'd just use his tongue to block the teat inside his mouth. Now, his tongue is perpetually sticking outside his little mouth.

Li'l K still doesn't smile....much. We've caught him smiling to himself on a couple of occasions but the moment he realises anyone's looking, he turns on his famous scowl. Sibey act cool!

Follow up on Jaundice

Today, we had to bring Baby K back to Dr Keoy to do a follow up check on his Jaundice level. Because of that, we'd been in a frenzy sunning K for the past few days and feeding him sugarcane.

They took so much blood from Baby K that after putting on the plaster, there was still blood seeping out. Euurghh! Poor thing. We were mortified when the results came back as 11.1 as it was 7.5 when he was discharged last week. Heng, doc said the results was ok for a 2 wks old baby and the jaundice will subside by itself. Phew. For a minute, I thought we had to admit him in for photo therapy again! *touchwood*

Baby K weighs 3.58kg today, a good improvement from last week's 3.3+kg. Jia You Keston!

10 Days Old today!

1 way trip to the hospital

Keston turned 1 week old in the hospital. We were really just bringing him back for a routine checkup, and he was supposed to take a blood test to check his jaundice level. At the laboratory, every infant that went in started bawling! Lil' K went in and dutifully had his blood drawn while his scaredy-cat mummy kept her eyes shut. Lil' K woke up briefly but did not utter a sound! I was so proud of him!

Sadly, the blood test returned with a jaundice level of 18 and we were given a choice of
1) Admitting the little bugger back to hospital for 2 days
or
2) Renting the 'suntanning bed' and monitoring him ourselves.

I wanted to rent the machine home, but HW convinced me that we were not professionals and would not even know if we were doing things right. Plus, we wouldn't be able to check on his jaundice every morning. So, very unwillingly, I agreed to leaving my baby behind.

On one hand, I was sad not to be able to see Kes all the time. Afterall, he's been attached to me for almost 9months now. On the other hand, we really really appreciated the rest! But still, I got abit kuku over the 2 days, smelling the baby cot and carseat.

Keston was discharged yesterday with jaundice level 7.5. We are so grateful! HW says he doesn't miss the little bugger and claims that his nightmare has begun again. But I did catch him beo-ing Kes non-stop ever since he's back! Men!

Keston's been sleeping beautifully. He didn't even wake us up last night for his 3-hourly feed. I think subconsciously he may have thought that waking us up caused his discard into the hospital. The poor baby.

Baby Keston has arrived!

I've been procrastinating starting a blog for BB but I guess now's as good a time as any.
BB's EDD was originally 14th August and HW and I were hoping for bb to turn up on 9th August (National Day!) or even 8th August (080808). Never did we expect bb to turn up before August even started!

Keston's birth story is as follows (very drama):

23rd July: I noticed a little bit of pinkish-brownish discharge. I was worried that it'll be the mucus plug but then there was really too little to be of any bother.

24th July: Still having the same weird colour discharge, so decided to visit my gynae early. Gynae did a VE and confirmed no dilation, and that the discharge was probably due to cervix starting to open. Asked him when I can expect labour to start, he said can be these 2 days or the next 2 weeks!

25th-27th July: Still seeing the same small amts of discharge everyday but didn't really bother as even if it's really the mucus plug, it's said that the actual delivery can be up to 2 weeks later. On the 27th July still happily went for Johnsons&Johnsons baby massage workshop!

28th July:
4.50pm-
Was in my parents' home and around 4.50pm I felt a trickle of water flowing down my leg. Saw that it was red bloody water. Went to the toilet and it became a gush of bloody water, no clots though. Again I was sure it wasn't labour yet cos' no pain but abit scared so called HW who called our gynae. Was instructed to head straight for the hospital delivery ward. Hosital bag haven't even prepare, hospital admission letter wasn't with me and I didn't even carry my IC! But again, I was sure it was false alarm so got my dad to drive me there.

5.15pm-
Reached hospital and slowly walked to the delivery ward when I was still calmly and abit paisey telling the nurse that my gynae asked me to check in cos' got blood. Nurse asked for my admission letter and i said HW will come with it in a little while. Asked to put on hospital gown and lie on the bed to be put on CTG machine. Blood still flowing. Midwife came to do VE. F*cking painful! When she withdrew her hand, huge gushes of blood came out. She tried again, same thing. She got abit shocked so quickly summon gynae to come. Cervix was only 2cm dilated.

5.30pm-
Dr arrived and did VE for me also. Same thing, huge gushes of blood came out whenever he removed his hand. The nurse changed the bed padding for me dunno how many times liao. Dr dig even deeper, trying to find the problem..which result in, of course f*cking pain! Suddenly Dr said "Prepare for EMERGENCY C-SECTION!" and the next thing I know, someone on my left side sticking a drip into my hand. Haven't even had time to register the pain when someone on my right was sticking a urinal tube up my ahem. It was damn painful lah, but at the same time, another person beside me had some forms for me to sign. To be honest, I was so blur that I didn't read what I was signing. Just keep on signing. Then HW appeared and he also look just as blur, but telling me don't worry. Dr pat me on the leg and said don't worry, the placenta came loose or something.

5.55pm-
Wheeled into the Operation Theatre. It still hadn't transpired to me that I am actually going to give birth now. I was given an oxygen mask, which didn't seem to dispense oxygen. Had such a hard time trying to suck air out of it so when the nurses weren't looking, I left a gap between the mask and my mouth so I can breathe! The anaesthesia guy (forgot what you call him) came and put something into my drip. Then my Dr was telling me don't worry if I feel sleepy. In my head, I was thinking "Yeah right! I'm so wide awake!" But then almost immediately, the room seemed to spin around and I was gone.

6.16pm-
Baby Keston breathed his first. HW, my dad and mum got to see him first.

7pm-
I slowly regained consciousness....still remember struggling to make my little finger move (like those coma patients you see on tv!)..then very very slowly, I woke up and realised I was still alive! You see, one of the things I hated about having GA is that I may never wake up again. *touchwood* The other, being I won't get to hear bb's first cry.

The reason for the early delivery, was that my placenta had broken into 2 pieces. Hence the bleeding. During surgery, doc also found that naughty BB had been entangling himself in his umbilical cord. So it was really a blessing in disguise.
